Benefits of sleep

Get sick less often

During sleep, the immune system releases proteins called cytokines, which are crucial for fighting infection, inflammation, and stress. Lack of sleep can reduce the production of these cytokines, as well as antibodies and cells that combat disease, making the body more susceptible to illness.

Think more clearly and do better at school or work

Sleep plays a fundamental role in cognitive functions like memory, attention, and problem-solving. A good night's sleep consolidates memories and clears out brain waste products. Without adequate sleep, cognitive processes can be impaired, leading to reduced concentration, poor decision-making, and slower reaction times.

Stay at healthy weight

Sleep deprivation can lead to hormonal imbalances, particularly hormones like ghrelin (which signals hunger) and leptin (which signals fullness). Lack of sleep can increase ghrelin and decrease leptin levels, resulting in increased hunger and appetite, possibly leading to weight gain. Additionally, fatigue can reduce motivation to exercise or make healthy dietary choices.

Enhanced creativity

During deep REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the brain reorganizes and restructures information, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. Artists, writers, and other creatives often find that a good night's sleep can lead to a surge in innovative ideas and solutions.

Lower the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease

Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to various health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, increased blood pressure, and insulin resistance (a precursor to type 2 diabetes). Sleep helps the body repair and maintain tissues, balance hormones, and regulate blood sugar levels.

Make better decisions and avoid injuries

A well-rested brain is more alert, has better reaction times, and can process information more effectively. Sleep deprivation impairs judgment and decision-making abilities. This can be particularly dangerous in situations that require quick reflexes or thoughtful analysis, like driving.
